Six students took part in the final of the All-Malaya Oratorical Contest organized by the Malayan Youth Council at the Kuala Lumpur Town Hall recently. The three winners were (from left): Ch'ng Kim Lian, T. Ananda Krishnan from the Victoria Institution, and Hilary de Cruz.

Gracing the occasion was Lady MacGillivray, wife of the High Commissioner. Each speaker spoke on the subject "The Malaya I want" - pointing out the country's ills and possible remedies. There were only two speakers from Selangor - Miss S. Mori of the M.G.S. and the V.I.'s Ananda Krishnan, 16, who was the last speaker. Immaculately dressed in a school blazer, he received a thunderous ovation even before he started.

At the end, Miss Elizabeth Kirkby, spoke of the high standard of the oratory and announced Ananda Krishnan as the winner. The runner-up was Ch'ng Kim Lian, 14, from St. George's Institution, Taiping, and third was Hilary de Cruz, 19, from St. Francis' Institution, Malacca.
