Simon Seow Poon Shing
27 November 1950 - 6 February 2021
Simon Seow graduated from City of London Polytechnic (now a university) in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Business Studies and a Certificate in Programming Technology. He was awarded a UK government scholarship to be trained in the then new field of computing technology. In the UK, he worked for Marks & Spencer Ltd, Sun Life of Canada and London Weekend Television. He relocated to Malaysia in 1981 where he worked for Kassim Chan, then the largest local audit and consulting company in Malaysia where he was the Manager in the set-up of the Malaysian operations of I/ACT (Institute of Advanced Computing Technology), a joint venture with the SGV Group of the Philippines. Simon then set up his own company, Info Spec Sdn Bhd and was the Managing Director. The main business is training at management level, specializing in Project & Programming Management, Business Analysis, Standards, Methodology, IT Governance and Enterprise Architecture. He was a Certified Practitioner for PRINCE2 Project Management; P3O Portfolio, Programme & Project Management Office; MSP Programme Management; Accredited Trainer PRINCE2; Accredited Trainer MSP; Certified Practitioner and Trainer SSADM Structured Systems Analysis & Design Methodology. Simon was a trainer of caliber excellence in these fields. He was also an Examiner for System Analysis & Design (British Computer Society); a Regional Moderator for National Computing Center, UK. He had more than 40 years of industry experience in a wide range of industries, situations and countries in designing programmes for top corporate organizations. He has worked in the UK and in Asia in the field of Finance, Education, IT and Consulting. Simon was elected Committee Member, founding member/chair of several special interest groups such as the Malaysian Chapter of EDP Auditors Association, Malaysian National Computing Confederation (formerly Malaysian Computer Society), PIKOM (The National ICT Association of Malaysia, a non-profit organization that represents the information and communications technology industry in Malaysia), and IT Vendors Association of Malaysia. In 2003 he was elected Vice-President of Gabungan Komputer Nasional Malaysia. The principal objectives of the Gabungan are: "To establish and maintain a national organisation for persons concerned with and interested in the application and practice of Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Processing and related disciplines." Simon was a keen photographer and has contributed his photographic skills at the annual get-togethers of the VI Group of 63-69. We have lost a humble and friendly mate and the Nation has lost an ICT "guru" whose contribution to the development and use of ICT in Malaysia, when ICT took on the world since the 70s, has done us all very proud as former students of the Victoria Institution.
