...70 YEARS AGO

1930

A.Perumyar has won the first prize in the essay competition on "Prevention of cruelty to animals" held by the KL Rotary Club. The competition was open to all the schoolboys in Selangor.

On 6th October all the House captains and some of the prefects went to observe the Federal Council meeting.

On Monday November 3rd Mr. Mummery, Dental Surgeon, FMS, gave a short talk to the boys during the morning assembly on the care of teeth.

The changing room in the pavilion is now being fully used by the boys, and every evening clothes can seen on all the pegs.

Our Poppy Day collection amounted to $172.53, the highest contribution coming from Standard VII-D with $14.64.

On October 31st we played the Anglo-Chinese School, Klang, in the Thompson Cup Final on the Sealngor, and won by one goal to nil. This is the first time we have won it and the cup has been lodged in a glass-fronted cupboard built specially for it and fixed in a conspicuous position in the School Library.

On September 18th the school was honoured by a visit from Eis Excellency Sir Cecil Clementi, KCMG, High Commissioner of the FMS, who was accompanied by Dr. R.O Winstedt, D.Litt., CMG, the Director of Education, and Mr T.A. O' Sullivan, Inspector of Schools, Selangor.

Our scout troop was presented with its colours on November 11th by the Hon. The Chief Justice, Mr. J.H. Elphinstone. The same day, a contingent from our school cadet corps also took part in the Armistice Day parade at the cenotaph.

In another assembly, Mr Stamford Raffles, a great grand-nephew of Sir Stamford Raffles, addressed the boys on his early days at school and how he and his school mates used to punish boys who sneaked.

The school cross country race was held on November 22nd. Lim Kim Beng, was first home and Yap Kwan Seng was the winning house.

The cup presented by Mr. C. Grenier, an ex-School Captain, to the best all-round cricketer for the year was won by E.R. de Jong, the School Cricket Captain. A cricket bat presented by Mr. Lall Singh, the well-known Old Boy, for the best batsman of the season was awarded to M.Y. Bahaudin.

Scythes have been banned from the padang and a motor mower now does their work.

We are proud to possess a school crest now. It is the work of Mr Burgess the Art Superintendent whom we thank very much for the pains he has taken to produce it. Mr C. Grenier, a former school captain, should also be remembered for being assiduous in the search for a suitable crest.


...60 YEARS AGO

1940

Mohamed Noor bin Marahakim and Abdul Majid bin Ismail were awarded State Scholarships and Too Chee Kwong an exhibition to the Medical College. Chong Yuen Shak won a Federal Scholarship to Raffles College.

S. Sivanason and T. Sivagnanam were awarded Victoria Scholarships. A blazer was presented to S. Sivanason in view of the work he had done as a scorer in the School Cricket XI for the last three years.

Rodney Lam, our Queen's Scholar and School captain left for the Medical College on the 29th of June. His departure was rather sudden, as many had the idea that he was leaving for England some time in August.

Mr H.I.S Kanwar, an old boy of the school has been selected by the Public Service Commission of India and has joined the Indian Military Academy, Dehra Dun, India, as a Special Entry Officer and will soon be taking up duties with the Indian Air Force.

Cinema shows have been introduced after a lapse of some years. The proceeds of these shows - each boy paying three cents - are donated to the Malaya Patriotic Fund. Films are shown fortnightly.

We are glad to have with us again, Mr C.E. Gates, our headmaster, who has returned from leave.

As it was thought that the Batu Road School premises would be required for military purposes, the boys were transferred to our school in the afternoons. However, it was soon known that their school was not needed for billeting, and the boys returned to Batu Road after being here a fortnight.

By beating the St. John's Institution and the M.B.S. 7-0 and 4-3 respectively, the School Badminton Team won the Lall Singh Shield for 1940.

We are glad to learn that the Old Boys' Malay Platoon in the F.M.S.V.F. is doing very well at field-training. This platoon had certainly raised the prestige of the V.I.C.C. and we hope it will continue with its good work.

Mr. H.I.S. Kanwar, on Old Boy of the School and who was once Pilot Officer to His Highness the Maharajah of Faridkot State, is back in Malaya as Second Lieutenant in the 2/16 Punjab Regiment.

Yap Pow Meng, the 1939 Queen's Scholar, has gone to Cambridge. He is proceeding to Sidney Sussex College where both Major E.H. Wilson (the acting headmaster) and Mr Gates, our present headmaster, were once graduates.


...50 YEARS AGO

1950

The headmaster announced that all weekly school assemblies would be held on Fridays instead of Mondays.

Mr McAslan of the Glasgow City Council addressed the school on 30th January on "Local Government'.

On 2nd February the School accepted its first girl student. Miss Yoong Yan Yoong, formerly of the Methodist Girls' school, was admitted to the Post School Certificate Arts Class.

The school football and badminton teams left for Ipoh by train on a games tour on 31st March.

On 1st April, the School defeated the Malay Collge, Kuala Kangsar, by 3 goals to 2, to bring home the much-coveted Tengku Laxamana Cup.

Mr James Griffiths, the Secretary of State for the Colonies, paid a visit to the school on 2nd June. He gave a brief address to the school. When the school captain asked for a holiday in honour of his visit, Mr Griffiths smilingly agreed.

The V.I. defeated the M.B.S. in their first post-war inter-school debate. The debate was well attended and the school opposed the motion that "Success in life depends more on perseverance than on intelligence".

Sir Alexander Carr-Saunders and Professor Silcock visited the school on 21st July. Sir Alexander addressed the Post Certificate boys and girls after which Professor Silcock also spoke on what was expected of one aspiring for further studies.

The Selangor Prefects' Term II Social was held in the school hall on 7th August.

On 14th August a social in honour of the visiting teams of Raffles Institution and Penang Free School was held in the school hall, under the patronage of the Director of Education, Mr M.R. Holgate. Senior girls of various girls schools were also invited to attend the function.

On 13th October, Mr Richard Sidney, a former headmaster of the V.I., gave an entertaining and instructive talk to the school on "The art of public speaking".

On 12th December the School Rugger and Hockey teams left for their tour of Singapore.


...40 YEARS AGO

1960

The V.I. beat MBS in the finals of the inter-school debating competition for the Tuan Syed Nasir Trophy held during National Language Week.

Chung Choeng Hoy and Hoh Wing, two of our prominent swimmers were awarded merit badges by the Royal Life-Saving Society. It is the highest award given by the Society. Hoh Wing, who has already left school, was the 1959 Swimming Captain. Choeng Hoy is now the School Water-Polo Captain and Swimming Vice-Captain.

A talk was given by Mr R. Thampipillay, a former teacher, on "History of the VI" on 22nd February.

A holiday was proclaimed by the Raja Muda after the annual Speech Day to celebrate the excellent academic and sporting achievements of the school the previous year.

Prof E.J. Eliezer from the University of Malaya gave a talk to science students on "Space Travel"

The Society of Drama successfully staged Shakespeare's "The Tempest" at the Town Hall from 23rd to 28th May.

All-rounder Lim Chooi Tee swept the Board in the 1960 Table-Tennis individual championships. He became the open singles and doubles champion and nearly captured the triple crown but lost in the finals of the mixed doubles. Miss Kok Kwan Yee was the girls open singles and mixed doubles champion.

Ho Kah Yen became the school's 1960 Badminton Open Singles Champion when he defeated Choo Min Hsiung. Koh Tong Chui captured the double in the junior championships. He is a younger brother of Koh Tong Boo, a former Selangor Novice Champion from the V.I.

In a thrilling finish, VI lost to the Royal Military College in the annual VI-FMC Athletics meet.

The V.I. sent in a team of six runners and came in first in the Selangor School's Cross Country Run. All our runners returned together. We were represented by Gan Kong Eng, Yap Fen Kong, Erwin Ratnaike, Shahb Ahrom, and Chong Sun Thein.

Mr William Campbell, a former Olympic swimmer from the University of Maryland, conducted a course of training for KL school boys in the school swimming pool. Mr Campbell had beaten the ex-Tarzan actor, Johnny Weissmuller, at the Olympics. Our swimming team gained a lot from the session, learning new styles and techniques.

On 1st July, the school debating team consisting of Sheila Sodhy, Mahdu Sudan and Foo Yeow Khean, successfully wrested the Thuraisingham Debating Shield from the MBS.

30 pupils including two girls, donated blood at the Lady Templer's Hospital on 6th July. Then on 29th July, 11 pupils donated blood at the Hospital in answer to an emergency call.

The V.I.C.C. took part in the march past held in the Merdeka Stadium in conjunction with the third anniversary of Merdeka.

The VI National Language Debating team won the inter-state debate against the King George V School, Seremban on 10th September.

On 29th September, the editorial boards of the Victorian and the Seladang held a joint farewell dinner for Mr G. Fernandez who was leaving for the London School of Economics. Mr Fernandez was the advisory teacher of both editorial boards.

The V.I. swept the board in the Selangor Combined Schools' Swimming Sports. The VI relay team won the Interschool free-style relay in record time.

The V.I. beat High School, KL, by 2-0 in the Final of the Interschool Hockey Competition for the Tun Abdul Razak Trophy at the TPCA Stadium.

During the Aquatic Meet on 8th October, 16 records fell. 8 were smashed in Class III, 5 by Kok See Leong of Thamboosamy House and the rest by Lee Yat Loong of YKS. In Class II, YKS's Yap Fook Loy took the lead to break 4 records. The other two were credited to Chung Choeng Hoy and Tan Tiong Tooi. The one Class I record was set by School Swimming Captain, Lum Ah Lek of YKS. The school relay team narrowly beat the MBAS in the 4x50 meters freestyle relay. The champion house in swimming was YKS.
